Publisher's summary

Looking back, they called those turbulent times simply The Troubles.

A period of chaotic upheaval and destruction that sent the Republic reeling through successive crises, each growing more desperate as the galaxy spun out of control.

Exactly when The Troubles started…that was open to interpretation. After the Savage Wars were thought to have ended, said some. Others claimed the period of death and war began with the Republic's action on Psydon. Still, others pointed to the Republic's forced migration of the zhee or even the arrival of the Mid-Core Rebellion, culminating in victories against the Legion at Kublar and the genocidal atrocities extending as far as Rhysis Whan.

But no matter when they began, the galaxy-shaking events of The Troubles were well remembered by those who suffered through them, and the scars of those upheavals would leave their indelible mark for years, and perhaps lifetimes, to come.

The brazen and open government corruption infesting the former capital planet of Utopion.

The arrival of the tyrant Goth Sullus, who briefly united opposition to the Republic before falling prey to the vanity of the title…The Emperor.

The Legion's invocation of Article Nineteen of the Republic Constitution, which brought an all-consuming flame to a simmering cold war that had long been stewing between the rulers and those forced to fight their needless wars.

The sudden unexpected attack by an alien race known as the Cybar. Relentless. Cruel. Inhuman in the extreme.

And finally, the long-planned return of a tribe of lost Savages, led by their messiah…the Golden King.

The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death.

In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Been there. Done that. Got burned along the way.

Because some things never change. Power summons would-be tyrants eager to seize it. Ancient vendettas cry out to be settled. Corruption worms its way through the souls of men too weak to resist it or too wicked to try. And dead-eyed killers gather in all the usual starports, awaiting the opportunity to do what they do best for the promise of a quick credit.

Through it all, the silent Legion waits for its cue to once more tread upon the stage and break its enemies through nothing more and nothing less than total violence of action capably applied. As though this time… things will be different.

Out on the edge, they say…

Everyone's got a plan until the Legion shows up.

What happen to RC Bray

Good plot but why was RC Bray changed out? Started with Bray but then some weird transition to Boyett. Like waking up after a bad bender.

Hot Dog! GE is back!

It was a lot of fun. The narrator wasn't RC Bray, but he did a great job. Of course, I miss Bray, but I'm not missing out, the narrator really is good.

The story is a little different in structure, but the scenes are awesome. It kind of seems like the authors had a but of great material that they wanted to use, so they're building a story out of it. It's a little different, but I'm really looking forward to the rest of it.

YES!

Finally, we get some much needed and desired context and backstory. The helmet speech doesn't need to be so robotic, they never were before, but other than that, I love it. Gimme more!

Set the hook deep

I'm hooked and waiting on pins and needles to see what comes next. Ill admit to a little apprehension about whether they'd be able to pull me back in after S2, but Nick and Jason did it, I feel that same excitement and sense of intrigue that I got from the start of Season 1, and I need to know what happens next.
Mark Boyett did a great job narrating, he deserves his reputation as one of the greats in audiobook narrating.

RC Bray's voice was missed

The story os excellent. Filling in some backstory on Wraith/Keel that is referenced in S2. The filling in of after the downfall of the Golden King is excellent as well.

The narration was not bad. I just wish that voice actors would try to keep continuity of voices rather than recreate characters that we have heard for 15 books already.

Good story. Didn't like the performance.

Good addition to the story, as always. Although the jump in the time line made me feel like I missed a book.

I don't think Mark Boyett is a good replacement for R. C. Bray. Boyett is an excellent voice actor, but I feel that his voice just doesn't work for this storytelling of hard/rough characters that are almost all military, bounty hunters, and space pirates.

One thing I did like about his performance is his ability to keep females from sounding weak and whiney, and thats about it for this performance.

RC Bray gone :(

While I enjoyed this book, the loss of RC Bray and his impact on this series kinda sucked. If his schedule was the issue I honestly wouldn’t have cared to wait another year for him to be the narrator.

Just getting into the Wraith back story

The narration is always a challenge with the GE verse. Each narrator adds a different point of view through its narration. Ray Porter was excellent in the books he did though I was bummed at first. The narrations and the story does water down wraith some from what know of him as a Leej but I am not finish with the book. Almost like, this is what Keel would be like pre Legion after he woke up out of KT Ice.

Great story! Didn’t love the performance though

I’ve listened to every GE book that has come out, and I love them! This one is another good story, filling in the gaps of the old stories and adding a little where it’s going. Of course I would love to have RC Bray to come back because he is legit the best voice there is in the sci/fy world! Boyette does a good enough job in the other stories I’ve heard him in, but man he did something that drove me up the wall in this.

For some reason he decided to do a “serious” voice when two of the main characters had their buckets on, and it was soooo annoying. I don’t know why he chose to do that, because it’s ok to say, “the voice was serious and deadly” but that’s just what all the leejes voices sounds like, so we don’t need to hear it acted out just use their regular character voice. But Boyette kept using the “serious” voice(s) when their buckets were on even when they were on comm which makes no sense because it wouldn’t alternate internal comm sounds, and it was so distracting. Then ironically at the last 2 hours maybe Boyette even got tired of it, because he just stopped doing it for some reason. And it made it so much better, like how it should have been the whole time.

Anyway, if Boyette is going to be the new voice of this season (I hope RC will be again) then he reeeeally needs to never do that “serious” voice ever again.

Besides that though, story was great and wanting more! KTF!
