Publisher's summary

Imagine that you live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other people's houses. You've known your neighbors for years and you trust them. Implicitly. You think your children are safe. But are they really? On a midsummer night, as a festive neighborhood party is taking place, preteen Pip discovers her 13-year-old sister Grace lying unconscious and bloody in a hidden corner of a lush rose garden. What really happened to her? And who is responsible?

Kind of dark, but enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this book and very much agree that fans of Liane Moriarty would enjoy it too. It is a bit of a slow burn but not unnecessarily slow, with well developed characters and interesting dynamics. I totally disagree with the reviews that say that the ending felt rushed. I felt like it made total sense and and aimed for well thought out and clabber over something that was just pure shock value.

Fascinating Story

Lisa Jewell is an amazing story teller! She describes the lives of ordinary people and the complexity of relationships among them. Her stories are rich with characters and the localities where they live. Excellent performance!

In my top three Jewell reads!

I’m a pretty picky listener and Lisa Jewell has set the bar high with some of her other books, but this one was fabulous!! Suspenseful, interesting and insightful!

Good Listen

Enjoyable, although sometimes difficult to follow as the story switches perspectives rather quickly and without (I feel) sufficient pause by the narrator. It also suddenly switches time periods without warning as well. But overall, a good listen!

Narrator is amazing

This narrator made the book in my opinion. Just beautiful accents and cadence and very believable conversations and feelings shine through. The book itself is only okay for me. She at first does do a good job of giving you many options for who could be the attacker, but I figured it out too quickly, so it wasn’t as fun that way. I don’t always like books where the author jumps between present and past, but this author does that very well and for a purpose. It really helps you see what happened on that night. I don’t know if I’ll look for another book from this author or not, but I definitely am going to see what other books this narrator has read.

Disappointed in the ending

Wish the author would have wrapped up the story better. Some character roles I thought would be important and revealed at the end of the story never did.

Mildly Entertaining

I'm fairly new with audible books, and not sure how much I'm missing by not actually reading the book. Especially in a story where the are a lot of characters, it's hard to keep track of who everybody is, because you're not being reinforced by seeing it in print throughout the stroy.
I was just mildly entertained. There were so many that "could have done it" it kind of diluted the story. I think teens might like it.

I liked it, didn't love it

the narrator was good.
it started out strong and the ending was ok.
It needed more of a twist in the end.
not a bad read though.

Decent, was expecting a better ending

Most of Jewell’s other novels end in a more shocking, satisfying way. I feel like this ended up having lots of unnecessary plot lines and was very predictable. Narrator was amazing, though. Loved her voice.
