The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

Story
I learned a great many things on the hiking trails of America. One of the most important is that we all climb mountains. Every. Single. Day. I thought I was just hiking mountains. What I was really doing was learning valuable lessons that I could equate directly to life. Hiking thousands of miles over perhaps hundreds of mountains all over the United States teaches you a lot. With that said, you don’t have to be a hiker to enjoy any of these revelations.

It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

Story
This is a terrific audiobook. It's interesting, well-written, and timely. It's the story of a textbook editor who retires, reads the popular book The Wild Effect and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail - and have an unexpected adventure! The tone is wry humor, tongue in cheek - the author has a great sense of humor, is perky, and as she learns in this adventure, is often in over her head! She is a very likeable character.

As the days unfold, however, she discovers her own wise strength and comes to the gratifying realization that a long marriage is like a long trail: there are ups and downs and it takes hard work to keep going, but the beauty along the way is staggering.

Why would a middle-aged businessman who had never even spent the night outdoors, attempt to hike the entire Appalachian Trail? Bill Walker, a former commodities trader in Chicago and London, and an avid walker, had developed a virtual obsession to hike this historic 2,175 mile footpath in one hiking season. In the summer of 1938, botanists Elzada Clover and Lois Jotter set off to run the Colorado River, accompanied by an ambitious and entrepreneurial expedition leader, a zoologist, and two amateur boatmen. With its churning waters and treacherous boulders, the Colorado was famed as the most dangerous river in the world. Journalists and veteran river runners boldly proclaimed that the motley crew would never make it out alive. But for Clover and Jotter, the expedition held a tantalizing appeal: no one had yet surveyed the plant life of the Grand Canyon, and they were determined to be the first.

Taking women seriously in science
- By Black Hills ski fairy on 12-29-23
Publisher's summary
Three friends, women in their fifties, set out to hike "the most beautiful long-distance trail in the world," the John Muir Trail. From the outset, their adventure is complicated by self-inflicted accidents and ferocious weather, then enriched when they "adopt" a young hiker abandoned by her partner along the trail.
The women experience the terror of lightning at eleven-thousand feet, the thrill of walking through a towering waterfall, and the joy of dancing among midnight moonshadows. For a month, they live immersed in vast natural beauty, tackle the trail's physical demands, and find camaraderie among an ensemble cast of eccentric trail characters. Together, they are pulled forward toward the trail's end atop the highest peak in the High Sierra, Mt. Whitney, and the culmination of their transformative journey.
Force of Nature is equal parts gripping adventure tale, personal memoir, and vivid nature writing.

Story
Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse.

Osbourne would remain there for the next nine years. Journal of a Trapper is his remarkable account as he developed into an experienced trapper and a seasoned mountain man of the Rockies.

Story
The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

Story
Thoreau gives an account of three canoe and hiking journeys - by himself and with others - through the mostly uninhabited forests of Maine in the 1850s. Identifying birds, trees and plants by their botanical as well as their common names, he also records the Indian names of lakes, rivers and plants. He investigates the connections between waterways and trails, and provides detail on camping, fishing and hunting in the woods, using whatever is at hand. Extolling the beauty of the wilds that he encounters, Thorough’s narrative is also imbued with elements of his philosophy.

“Wander a whole summer if you can…” John Muir
This book reads like a movie! Joan Griffin takes you on a real life adventure with her comrades as they embark on the infamous John Muir Trail in California. You really feel as if you’re right there with them as they experience treacherous trails, the unpredictable elements of nature and its extraordinary beauty as well as fascinating encounters with characters along the way…
Joan’s own personal ability to access the courage deep within to keep going despite all of the obstacles (internal and external) is inspiring and remarkable!
The reader truly gets to experience the legendary John Muir Trail through the author’s first hand personal journey… Highly recommend!

Love it so far!
Joan was one of my teachers in 8th grade (and one of my favorites overall). This story takes place one or two years before she became my teacher. Not only do I love the story and how it's written, but to peek behind the curtain and see this very human side of such a large figure from my childhood adds an extra layer of interest and emotion

Well great… now I want to hike the JTP… I don’t think my husband will appreciate this!
I love wilderness camping, but do most of it through kayak and canoe trips. After reading this and hearing about all the different types of people, especially those with imperfections, who do big hikes, now I may have a new goal. I felt like I was right there with the author, she really brought you on the trail with her. The reader had a beautiful voice that I really connected with. Be warned before you read, if you have an affinity for the outdoors, this could inspire you to do something you might have never even considered!

Inspired!
I was impressed with how well this book was written. How well it described their surroundings! I loved watching them grow in physical and mental strength! I am so inspired to hike more than I already do! I must say that about 2/3rds of the way through I couldn't stand it anymore and went on line looking for pictures from their hike. Boy was I impressed to find not only pictures they took that brought this book to life even more than her excellent writing, but the pictures are labeled with what day it was and the locations so I was able to follow along as I listened to this book on audible. I have to say that I finished the book just now while I was hiking! Now I need to start it again matching pictures up to the days!

Go take a hike
Most likely, I will never experience the trail myself. with this beautiful story I was able to close my eyes, listen, and be a part of that piece of nature.

I feel like I was there.
I am continually amazed how much nature reveals and heals. The 3 women were and encouragement to each other.
