In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

Germany, 1946: Emmy Clarke is a librarian not a soldier. But that doesn’t stop the Library of Congress from sending her overseas to Germany to help the Monuments Men retrieve and catalog precious literature that was plundered by the Nazis. The Offenbach Archival Depot and its work may get less attention than returning art to its rightful owners, but for Emmy, who sees the personalized messages on the inside of the books and the notes in margins of pages, it feels just as important.

Story
Early in the Great War, men left Britain’s factories in droves to enlist. Struggling to keep up production, arsenals hired women to build the weapons the military urgently needed. “Be the Girl Behind the Man Behind the Gun,” the recruitment posters beckoned. Thousands of women—cooks, maids, shopgirls, and housewives—answered their nation’s call. These “munitionettes” worked grueling shifts often seven days a week, handling TNT and other explosives with little protective gear.

She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Publisher's summary
Inspired by a true story, two teens kidnapped by an African warlord find salvation through love in a powerful and healing historical novel from the #1 bestselling author of Beneath a Scarlet Sky and The Last Green Valley.
Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori are coming of age in Uganda in the 1990s. Outstanding students, they believe in being good humans before they are kidnapped and forced into the fanatical Lord’s Resistance Army.
In a legion of young recruits, no one gets closer than Anthony to powerful messianic warlord Joseph Kony and his darkest secrets. To stay sane as he spirals through chaos, Anthony clings to his childhood lessons about being a good human. Florence’s upbringing grounds her, too, helping her keep her dreams alive even as she’s pulled deeper into the insanity of Kony’s war.
At the lowest points of their lives, certain they’ll never go home, Anthony and Florence meet by chance, fall in love, and begin to dream of surviving their captivity. They devote their lives to helping their fellow child soldiers escape bondage and return to their families and redemption by following the stars.
By turns tender, shocking, moving, desperate, and ultimately triumphant, Florence and Anthony’s story is an epic drama of humanity, a life-affirming tale, and an experience readers will never forget.
Featuring an afterword by Anthony and Florence Opoka.
Critic reviews
“Mark Sullivan’s All the Glimmering Stars is the pinnacle of an already distinguished career. A searing piece of historical fiction steeped in a yearslong deep dive into the horrors of child soldiering, it is at its core something tender and rare: a love story between two profoundly good people striving for light in unimaginable darkness. It is a joy and an inspiration.”—Gregg Hurwitz, New York Times bestselling author of the Orphan X series
“Set amid the harrowing chaos of Joseph Kony’s cultlike regime and his abducted children turned soldiers, an extraordinary narrative of love and unwavering resilience emerges. The intertwined journey of Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori stands as a luminous symbol of hope. Their love becomes a refuge, a testament to the human spirit’s endurance.”—Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of The Many Daughters of Afong Moy
“All the Glimmering Stars is a searing tribute to the power of love and the endurance of the human spirit. You can’t look away from the harrowing survival story of Anthony and Florence Opoka. Mark Sullivan shows how the tiniest glint of hope can sustain us in life’s darkest moments. Masterful and moving.”—Robert Dugoni, bestselling author of The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

The Brothers Karamazov is a murder mystery, a courtroom drama, and an exploration of erotic rivalry in a series of triangular love affairs involving the “wicked and sentimental” Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov and his three sons—the impulsive and sensual Dmitri; the coldly rational Ivan; and the healthy, red-cheeked young novice Alyosha. Through the gripping events of their story, Dostoevsky portrays the whole of Russian life, is social and spiritual striving, in what was both the golden age and a tragic turning point in Russian culture.

This was an incredible story of resilience, survival, strength, courage, hope and love in the face of evil.
While not always easy to listen to, the story will stay with me for a long time. I can’t imagine being in Florence or Anthony’s shoes, but thankful to enter their lives for a while. They are “good humans.”

Riveting!
Just as tantalizing and amazing as “The last green valley” and “beneath a scarlet sky” this book glued me to my device for days. I could not stop telling my husband about every detail as I listened. The narrator has an amazing range of accents and pronunciation, spot on! The story gets better on every page. I’m not much of a student of recent events, as I prefer more distant events for study but Sullivan’s ability to tell the story makes any story memorable. Absolutely brilliant!

Love, Gratitude, and Forgiveness = Good Humans
Very few books leave me utterly speechless. This is one of those books. What Anthony, Florence, and all the other child soldiers went through is absolutely shattering. And yet they gleaned what good they could and overcame their trauma by forgiving the depraved maniac Joseph Kony. Thank you, Mark Sullivan, for bringing the horrific issue of child soldiers to light. I will be donating to EndChildSoldiering.com and giving this book to many of my friends and relatives.
