Story
At age six, Sasha DiGiulian stepped into a climbing gym for the first time and was competing within a year. Decked out in all-pink gear and with her blonde hair tied into pigtails, Sasha knew from an early age what it was like to be a girl in a traditionally male-dominated sport, vowing to never sacrifice her femininity to fit in. With a fierce love for the climb and incredible natural talent, Sasha soon won her first National Sport Climbing Championship at only seventeen, and a year later took the title of World Champion.

On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history - Yosemite’s nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after 19 days on the route. This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit.

Patagonia's Cerro Torre, considered by many the most beautiful peak in the world, draws the finest and most devoted technical alpinists to its climbing challenges. But controversy has swirled around this ice-capped peak since Cesare Maestri claimed first ascent in 1959. Since then a debate has raged, with world-class climbers attempting to retrace his route but finding only contradictions. This chronicle of hubris, heroism, controversies, and epic journeys offers a glimpse into the human condition, and why some pursue extreme endeavors that at face value have no worth.

In 2018, two couples set out on a climbing expedition to Alaska’s Hidden Mountains, one of the last wild ranges in North America. A rarity in modern climbing, the peaks were nearly unexplored and untouched, a place where few people had ever visited and granite spires still awaited first ascents. Inspired by generations of daring alpinists before them, the four climbers were now compelled to strike out into uncharted territory themselves.

What does it take to be one of the world's best high-altitude mountain climbers? A lot of fundraising; traveling in some of the world's most dangerous countries; enduring cold bivouacs, searing lungs, and a cloudy mind when you can least afford one. It means learning the hard lessons the mountains teach. Steve House built his reputation on ascents throughout the Alps, Canada, Alaska, the Karakoram, and the Himalaya that have expanded possibilities of style, speed, and difficulty.

Publisher's summary
Renowned rock climber Beth Rodden’s inspiring memoir about overcoming devastating trauma, refusing to be held hostage by fear, and taking a leap toward healing.
Beth Rodden is twenty years old and already an elite rock climber when a climbing excursion in Kyrgyzstan escalates into a nightmare. Beth, her boyfriend, and two other climbers are kidnapped by militant rebels. After six harrowing days of hiding, marching, and dodging gunfire, they miraculously escape captivity. But fear follows Beth home, and pushing past it becomes a fixation.
She and her boyfriend, Tommy, train obsessively, achieving rock-climbing greatness and conquering each groundbreaking goal they set, all the while burying the terrors of Kyrgyzstan deep inside. Then comes an unexpected breaking point. For Beth, a woman at the top of her profession, the only way to overcome the anxiety that still controls her is to let go of the lifeline she’s been clinging to. Blowing up her successful and familiar life, Beth clears a path to a new one—a healthy new normal beyond the anxieties of the past and the myopic pursuit of athletic perfection.
Charting a powerful journey of ambition, hope, love, physical and emotional endurance, and the true fulfilment of being oneself, A Light through the Cracks is Beth’s story of climbing up and through life.
Critic reviews
“Offering glimpses into Rodden’s exhilarating climbing culture, emotional vulnerabilities, marital turmoil, and steely personal discipline, which continues to ensure her survival. A dramatic account of an international ordeal that nearly upended the career of a fearless young rock climber.”—Kirkus Reviews
“In this breathtaking memoir, Beth seamlessly weaves together her stories as an all-time athlete, kidnapping survivor, partner, and mother. She brings the reader into her inner world as she learns to let go of fear and expectations in order to find her true strength—not just the strength of her body, which set records and made her a legend of the climbing community, but the strength of her very heart and soul.”—Sanni McCandless Honnold, cofounder of Outwild, life coach, and mother
“Beth’s ability to be truly humble and wildly inspiring is totally unique. To read such a raw, honest, and vulnerable insight into Beth’s journey is a gift.”—Shauna Coxsey, Olympian, world champion, and mother

If someone were to ask Jasmine Santos to describe the last few years of her life with a single word, it would definitely be a four-letter one. After 17 years - and countless broken bones and broken promises - she knows her window to compete in figure skating is coming to a close. But when the offer of a lifetime comes in from an arrogant idiot she's spent the last decade dreaming about pushing in the way of a moving bus, Jasmine might have to reconsider everything.

Many poker players can make good decisions at the table with a reasonable frequency. Nevertheless, there are numerous situations where even very experienced players behave in predictable ways. These deeply-ingrained habits lead them to make mistakes. The problem is that these situations won't often arise at the table by chance - you have to make them happen. Exploitative Play in Live Poker is a ground-breaking work that teaches you how to create the circumstances where your opponents will be likely to blunder and how to exploit them when they do.

Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air or has seen a recent photo of climbers standing in line to get to the top of Everest may think they have the mountain pretty well figured out. It’s an extreme landscape where bad weather and incredible altitude can occasionally kill, but more so an overcrowded, trashed-out recreation destination where rich clients pad their egos—and social media feeds—while exploiting local Sherpas. There’s some truth to these clichés, but they’re a sliver of the story.

Beth Rodden is an exceptional human being
I love reading stories about women who overcome obstacles internally and externally and this book was exactly that. Beth is an awesome athlete and in the second half of the book she became so relatable and open and raw and honest. I remember my dad showing me pictures of her in magazines and thinking “I could never do that because my body doesn’t look like that.” The redemption arc for her fight with body image is worth the wait to the last chapter. Thank you for writing this book, Beth!

An actually great athlete book! Thank you for writing it. Engaging, important, awesome.
I typically don’t love climber books even as a 20+ year obsessive climber myself. This one is different. It’s an awesome story told really well by a hero. Engaging, heartwarming (and heartbreaking too). So good! Audio is great (on 1.5 speed 😁). Thank you for writing it. I thought you were a hero before, but now you’re a legend.

I loved this book! It is engaging and relevant. This book was fun, inspiring, honest and beautifully done. A very worthwhile read (or listen).

The diary of an adult still stuck in adolescence
Yes she did have a traumatic experience when she was 20 about 25 years ago and this creates a level of sympathy that made me buy her book. I found this book narcissistic like the diary of an adolescent masked by an artificial “vulnerability”. A paid athlete with privilege that spends her life climbing rocks that complains about how hard her life is….not an inspiring book and definitely not a great message overall.
