If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Despite gold medals, WNBA championships, and a list of accolades, A’ja Wilson knows how it feels to be swept under the rug—to not be heard, to not feel seen, to not be taken seriously. As a fourth grader going to a primarily white school in South Carolina, A’ja was told she’d have to stay outside for a classmate’s birthday party. Wilson tells stories like this, about how even when life tried to hold her down, it didn’t stop her. She shares her contribution to “The Talk,” and how to keep fighting, all while igniting strength, passion, and joy.

Small acts of courage matter. Sometimes, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom—for idealism itself—against all odds, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard, and costly.

Resumen del Editor
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the nine-time women’s basketball icon and two-time Olympic gold medalist—a raw, revelatory account of her unfathomable detainment in Russia and her journey home.
“Compelling . . . An intimate, honest recollection of Griner’s time held captive in Russia. Coming Home reads as a deeply personal, publicly powerful documentation of what happened—what is still happening—to her body and mind.”—Slate
On February 17, 2022, Brittney Griner arrived in Moscow ready to spend the WNBA offseason playing for the Russian women’s basketball team where she had been the centerpiece of previous championship seasons. Instead, a security checkpoint became her gateway to hell when she was arrested for mistakenly carrying under one gram of medically prescribed hash oil. Brittney’s world was violently upended in a crisis she has never spoken in detail about publicly—until now.
In Coming Home, Brittney finally shares the harrowing details of her sudden arrest days before Russia invaded Ukraine; her bewilderment and isolation while navigating a foreign legal system amid her trial and sentencing; her emotional and physical anguish as the first American woman ever to endure a Russian penal colony while the #WeAreBG movement rallied for her release; the chilling prisoner swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout; and her remarkable rise from hostage to global spokesperson on behalf of America’s forgotten. In haunting and vivid detail, Brittney takes listeners inside the horrors of a geopolitical nightmare spanning ten months.
And yet Coming Home is more than Brittney’s journey from captivity to freedom. In an account as gripping as it is poignant, she shares how her deep love for Cherelle, her college sweetheart and wife of six years, anchored her during their greatest storm; how her family’s support pulled her back from the brink; and how hundreds of letters from friends and neighbors lent her resolve to keep fighting. Coming Home is both a story of survival and a testament to love—the bonds that brought Brittney home to her family, and at last, to herself.
Reseñas de la Crítica
“A visceral, harrowing account of what it’s like to be trapped inside Russia’s infamous criminal justice system, with its merciless judges and vast labor camps.”—The New York Times Book Review
“Riveting . . . Coming Home delves unflinchingly into the dehumanizing indignities the Olympic athlete suffered during the 10 months she served out of a nine-year sentence.”—The Washington Post
“A detailed accounting of Griner’s harrowing journey through a Russian legal system known for its corruption . . . Read her book, a 300-plus page deep dive on an experience many of us wouldn’t have been able to recover from, and I suspect your empathy will grow−for her and all of humanity . . . The ripple effect in life is real, and if Griner’s honesty helps even a dozen readers see the world differently, that impact, her impact, will be felt for years. Griner's book will get people talking to each other, and that's when real change begins.”—Lindsay Schnell, USA Today

Many poker players can make good decisions at the table with a reasonable frequency. Nevertheless, there are numerous situations where even very experienced players behave in predictable ways. These deeply-ingrained habits lead them to make mistakes. The problem is that these situations won't often arise at the table by chance - you have to make them happen. Exploitative Play in Live Poker is a ground-breaking work that teaches you how to create the circumstances where your opponents will be likely to blunder and how to exploit them when they do.

What My Hand Say, on one hand, is a bold unapologetic tribute to Black people living their lives in South Carolina. While on other hand, it is a palpable reckoning with the state’s weighted history. Challenge Yourself
Love her or leave her, BG sheds lights on so many issues we encounter everyday, yet ignore & often leave unchallenged within ourselves - racism, sexism, pay inequality, homophobia, PTSD, long-held expectations of how feel people "should look."
One of the additional duties I had in combat was to track those US citizens that were deemed "isolated," i.e. detained, kidnapped, and/or "whereabouts unknown." While talking to a coworker about this book, I realized I'd shielded myself from all those names years ago. I'd forgotten them. BG reminded me that my advocacy for those wrongfully detained, those murdered, those fighting to survive each day - while I bemoan insignificant shit - need remembered. Their names should not be forgotten. Their advocacy needs to be a active venture, vice a passing whisper in the media.
Challenge yourself. Step into someone else's world. Read a different view. Challenge your perspective. Be kind. Demonstrate Love. Advocate for those who don't have a voice.

A great story of courage and challenges she endured and the transition efforts back to being BG

The transparency and vulnerability in this book is unmatched…
This is an amazing story of perseverance, teamwork, family and just love in general. Everyone deserves to be treated like a human being…I’m so glad Brittney came home!

Inspiring
BG’s courage in telling her story was inspiring. Although many aspects of her story are unique to her (experiencing the horror of being detained in Russia), many themes in her story can be universal (feeling like an outsider, anxiety, being true to who you are). I applaud BG for being open and vulnerable in sharing her story and for continuing to bring awareness to those still being detained in other countries around the world.

She Made It
I like many others prayed that BG would come home. I was so happy when she was finally released. I imagined the horrors she had to deal with while a prisoner in Russia, but the reality was even worse. The story was riveting. My heart hurt when reading about having her womanhood questioned. Hopefully, her story will provide an encouragement to other black women simply trying to make it in this country that never seems to love us as much as we love it.

Breathtaking!
I couldn’t put this one down! My heart aches for Brittney and her wife, family and friends. I followed the story and the media, but the book told the real story and it was worth the wait!

Vulnerable story
I’ve known BG on the court and a bit off for many years now (as a fan), and her story here is no different than the woman I’ve gotten to know. Giving, loving, vulnerable yet strong, strong yet weakly human. Thank you for sharing such vulnerability with us here and always in the game and in real everyday life. I can’t wait to meet Baby G courtside one day soon. I’m sad to know how tough this journey was and is for so many still held. When we come together, we make miracles happen. Welcome home. You belong here, just as you are.
